A 'nom de plume' for one of our talented wordsmiths...


It is that time of the year where the hustle and bustle of retailers preparing for the launch of their Christmas campaigns becomes a realisation. Many of them chose to take some time away from their busy workloads to immerse into the world of Magento at this year’s Magento Live conference #MLAU15, held at the Hilton in Sydney CBD, Australia last week.

Balance Internet was a proud sponsor and sent a crew of enthusiastic attendees to this year’s Magento Live conference. Our local Sydney team led the way along with Directors’ and founders Mal Williams, David Crothers and James Horne. We had the pleasure of joining leading Australian retailers and vendors in the welcoming of Magento’s newest upgrade Magento 2.0. Both vendors and retailers had the opportunity to exchange information at this two day event, as most have a wealth of knowledge and unique experiences within this space.

Highlight of the first day was “What to Expect from Magento 2.0: Merchant & System Integrators Perspectives”. This was a panel with two retailers speaking of their own experience with Magento 2.0. Balance Internet’s Technical Director, Mal Williams was proudly part of this panel with Popcultcha’s CEO, Ash Howard, whose newest site “Cultcha Kids” had launched in conjunction with the conference, using the latest version of Magento, Magento 2.0. This was an exciting achievement for Balance Internet and Popcultcha, as it is one of the first Magento 2.0 websites in the world. The project was run by Mal Williams and our team of highly skilled Magento 2.0 certified developers.

The panel was extremely successful as it gave both Balance Internet and Popcultcha the opportunity to share their experience, tips and success stories for Magento 2.0.

So what’s Magento 2.0 all about?

Well, we must say we are pretty excited about improvements that retailers will be seeing with this new release over the next few years. Whilst many retailers will stick with Magento 1, a number of retailers will be ready to take the plunge immediately.

Here are some of the key advantages and features:

  • Full page caching allowing page load speed to come down to 1 to 2 seconds, increasing conversion and creating a better user experience for retail customers
  • Faster checkout process, including removal of credit card “type” field
  • Improved backend Magento process with the ability to customise the Magento admin grid
  • Support for integrations
    • Improved API & integration points (eg. Webhooks)
    • Allows us to connect easily to external systems like Lightspeed and Akeneo PIM (roadmap)
  • Modular code base, new theme/layout framework
  • Automated testing

Other popular sessions included pitchfest, where vendors were to present an elevator pitch about their product or technology to the MagentoLive Australia audience.
And another session targeted for startups. Believe it or not, if you work with the right partner and solution as a start-up, you can be on your way to having a better performing website than retailers that have been doing it for decades.

We also proudly wore the purple jacket of AkeneoPIM and promoted the product as the sister product to Magento at our stand. Over the two days we did 12 demos of the AkeneoPIM product.
